Australia Competition

Wed Aug 24 2011

Last year we ran a competition that was stickered on all Alex Rider books, a competition to win a once-in-a-lifetime holiday to South Australia and Tasmania with Qantas Holidays. The winners are down under as we speak, having just completed the first leg of their tour in South Australia. Read all about it below...

We have come to the end of our South Australia itinerary and fly to Tasmania tomorrow. Here is a bit about our travels so far...

It was a long journey to Adelaide but Qantas provided plenty of in-flight entertainment which kept us entertained throughout. We were so excited when we touched down in Adelaide and although tired, were more than ready to start our adventures!

In the first few days, we explored the city and visited Adelaide Zoo where we met the Giant Pandas Wang Wang and Funi. We also visited Cleland National Park where the children were able to hand feed kangaroos and wallabies. Here we had our first encounter with a koala bear albeit a large one at 10 kgs!

Kangaroo Island was our next destination and provided memories so special they will live with us for ever. Our guide was passionate about wildlife and taught us so much as we watched kangaroos and wallabies grazing freely on this beautiful island. Our children loved the 'koala spotting' and we saw plenty of them hugging the eucalyptus trees! At Seal Bay, we walked quietly among sea lions and took in the most amazing scenery including watching seals playing in the water. Our guide pointed out native birds and plants and we were lucky enough to see a couple of echidnas too.

We have spent the last three days in a 4WD discovering the Flinders Ranges. It was a long drive but one which included plenty of wildlife, particularly as we reached the outback. Emus, kangaroos (many with Joeys in their pouches), amazing birds of prey, parrots and cockatiels, not to mention a few spiders and snakes made for a very memorable trip. Again, we are indebted to our guide who was so knowledgeable and made the experience a very special one. Being in the tranquil outback, surrounded by nature and stunning landscape is an experience we will treasure forever.

We'll have more updates from our competition winners on their return!
