In an attempt to prevent Drevin from escaping by plane from Flamingo Bay, Alex ties two canoes to the floats of his Cessna seaplane using waterskiing tow ropes. As Drevin circles the island the canoes get caught up in the pine trees, ripping the bottom out of the plane, and making it crash. Drevin is killed. Alex had hoped that the canoes would have stopped Drevin from taking off.
